FIGHT FOR IT 19 REWIND: COOK VS SIMPSON

Fight Recap: Josh Cook vs. Emmanuel Simpson

This was a wild, emotional scrap between two talented but stylistically contrasting athletes. While many may have labeled this as the tired “striker vs. grappler” dynamic, the reality was more complex. Josh Cook, a tall, aggressive fighter with long-range weapons and real knockout power, opened strong with kicks and punches from the outside, using his frame to push the pace. Emmanuel Simpson, repping a strong grappling team but showcasing surprisingly crisp dirty boxing and short-range punches, stayed composed and patient in the pocket, capitalizing on Cook’s defensive gaps.

The first round saw Simpson landing big shots, hurting Cook just before the bell, putting a stamp on the round with a near knockdown. However, in true fighter fashion, Cook made the comeback narrative his own. In the second, he dropped Simpson with a hard cross and poured on the ground and pound. The referee jumped in—perhaps a bit early, especially considering the earlier knockdown Simpson scored—but the stoppage stood. Cook walked away with the TKO win, but both fighters left the cage having made strong impressions. For Cook, refining his tall-man defense is a must. For Simpson, he proved he could hang and hurt people on the feet, even if he didn’t get the call this time.

Cook is now scheduled to make his professional debut on August 16th in Virginia. Based on the stats and performance shown, Cook appears to have the stronger, more complete skill set going into that next matchup. Hopefully, we’ll see him once again showcase those evolving tools at a future Fight For It event—this time as a professional.
